Before proceeding to the preparation details of CCNA exam -- Cisco Certified Network Associate exam, you need to know what the exam is all about. CCNA exam aids in testing network related skills in an individual such as deploying mid-size networks in addition to troubleshooting problems.

CCNA exam: Routing & Switching

This is your first step in the network management career. Even if you have prior experience in networks, your knowledge depth will improve. This certification is especially suitable for professionals at the associate-level. It is comprised of Interconnecting Cisco Networking Devices Part 1 and Part 2. Part1 exam is for Network Technicians. Part 2 is for Network Associates.

Details about the duration of the exam and requirements of the exam

Interconnecting Cisco Networking Devices Part 1 is referred by the code 640-822 ICND1. It is associated with the following certifications – CCNA, CCENT. The exam runs for 1.5 hours. During this period, you have to finish answering 40 to 50 questions. You can complete the exam in many languages including: French, English and Chinese.


The code of ICND2 is 640-816 ICND2. It has to be completed only for gaining CCNA certification. The duration of the exam is 75 minutes and there are maximum 50 questions.

Topics that are covered in Part 1 and Part 2

Following are some of the topics of Part 1: fundamentals concepts related to networks, The OSI reference model and the TCP/IP model, Routing, Network Security, concepts related to wireless and configuration details of non-complex networks.

Part 2 covers some topics and the details are: troubleshooting concepts, VLANs and routing related to VLANs and IP.

The following are some of the topics that are part of the new curriculum:Wireless networks, common security threats and solutions for these threats, protocols like VLANs, Enhanced Interior Gateway Routing Protocol, IP and Routing Information Protocol version 2.

CCNA certification related to Routing & Switching involves completing two exams. When you complete part 1 of the exam, it becomes useful for CCENT certification too. If you have work experience, you must concentrate in mastering topics that are beyond your scope.
